New Users & General Issues
  1. What do I need to get Flying J WiFi service?
You need a laptop or handheld device with WIFI 802.11b and/or 802.11g wireless capability. Your current device may already have built-in capability. If not, you can purchase a WIFI 802.11b and/or 802.11g wireless networking card or antenna for most laptops from a Flying J Travel Plaza or most electronics retailers. When your device is wireless-enabled, you will need to set your SSID (or network identifier) to flyingj. Your wireless network card documentation will have specific instructions on how to make this change. You will need an Internet-ready browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape) from any operating system.

  2. Do I need to install any unique software to connect to the Flying J WiFi network?
The only software you will need is the software driver for your WIFI 802.11b wireless network card and an Internet-ready web browser.

  3. Can I connect using a Palm or Pocket PC handheld device to the Flying J’s network?
Yes, provided your Palm or Pocket PC handheld device (that support WIFI 802.11b wireless technology) utilizes a standard Internet-ready browser.

  4. How do I find out where the Flying J WiFi HotSpot locations are?
Our HotSpot locations can be found at FlyingJ.com or you can pick up a WiFi directory booklet at any Flying J plaza. A PDF WiFi location directory file is available on our web site for download.

  5. What method of payment can be used to purchase time?
We accept all major credit cards, Value Talk calling cards, Flying J gift cards (cash) and all other Flying J prepaid debit cards.

  6. When will Flying J upgrade it's WiFi hotspots to the 802.11g standard?
Since the vast majority of WiFi cards in the marketplace are based on the 802.11b standard, it makes no sense for us to "upgrade" our network to the g standard. While the 802.11g standard will support speeds up to 54Mbps in theory, in reality 802.11g access points that operate in dual mode have a maximum throughput of 18Mbps. When a user logs on to the network using one of the more popular 802.11b cards, the entire hotspot switches to a maximum throughput of 9 Mbps. For more information on the 802.11 IEEE standard, visit www.ieee.org.
  7. How do I contact Flying J WiFi customer service?
    Call toll-free 1-800-870-9068

  8. What if I  have a wireless card that I use on other WiFi networks and I want to subscribe to Flying J WiFi access?
You will need to change your Service Set Identifier (SSID), "also referred to as the Network Name" on your laptop to flyingj. The SSID differentiates one wireless network from another. The procedures for changing the SSID vary, based on wireless card manufacturer. Some client utilities will allow you to create a "profile" for each network making it easy to switch back and forth. For help, contact customer service at 800-870-9068.

  9. If I purchase WiFi access, can I use the high-speed data jacks at the Flying J's with the same log in and password?
Located in the driver’s lounge and select booths in the restaurant you will find Flying J data jacks. The Ethernet and USB connections provide the same high speed access as WiFi access. Connect your Ethernet or USB cable to the box. Install the driver from the CD if using USB. Open a web browser and log in just like when using WiFi service. There is some added security in a wired connection.

  10. How can I tell how much time I have left on my high-speed subscription?
Once you have purchased a subscription, you will get verification via email of the amount purchased. Each time you log on using your subscription, you will see the remaining time balance.

  11. How is time deducted from a subscription?
Subscriptions are deducted in continuous blocks of time. The subscription starts at log on and ends at the end of that actual time period. You cannot use time purchased intermittently (i.e. stopping and starting at intervals). You can log on as many times as you want until the subscription expires.
Example: If a customer purchases 60-minutes and let’s say they log on at 10:00 a.m., Their subscription will end at 11:00 a.m. If a customer purchases 24-hours and let’s say they log on at 10:00 a.m. on January 01, their subscription will end at 10:00 a.m. on January 02.

  12. Is my time subscription transferable?
No. Only one user can be on the account. See subscription "Terms and Conditions" for details.

  13. Where can I expect to get the best wireless signal at Flying J Travel Plazas?
The signal should work well throughout the inside of the plaza building and over the entire parking area. Large obstacles (like other trucks) may impact your use of the system relative to the location of your wireless antenna. For best results, avoid using in areas where your wireless card or antenna is blocked by other vehicles or buildings. Best performance is achieved when a direct line of sight is available between your device and the building roof top antennas.

  14. Can I access AOL and other Internet Service Providers (ISP) with Flying J High-Speed Internet?
Once you get logged on you can browse any site, including AOL's home page.

  15. What is the name of the outgoing mail server to use when I am online with Flying J High Speed Internet?
Unfortunately we don't provide an outgoing mail server for use with our internet access. Your personal ISP may allow you access through them if you use SMTP authentication. You should contact them for more information.

Technical Issues

  1. Worked fine yesterday but not today. What happened?
The most import thing to consider when this problem occurs is if anything has changed since the last time you logged onto the network: installed new software, ran Norton Utilities or other system maintenance software, switched to a dialup connection, moved to a different HotSpot location. Even rebooting the computer can change your default setting and affect your connection. Becoming familiar with your computer’s setting will help you trouble shoot this problem when it arises. Tech support can also help you quickly diagnose and correct the problem.

  2. Can't locate a signal at Flying J or HotSpot (or picking up a different signal).
Make sure your SSID is set to flyingj (all lowercase, no spaces) within the wireless configuration software or under preferred networks in Windows XP. You may also not be close enough to the antenna. Try moving to a different location.

  3. Have a good signal but cannot connect to Internet.
This means your computer is not correctly connected with our network. Begin by restarting your computer, opening your Internet browser and manually typing in a non-Flying J website, like CNN.com or NBA.com. You cannot set the Flying J WiFi login screen as your home page. The login will only work once you have connected to the Internet. Our network should redirect you to the Flying J WiFi login page.

  4. How do I use the wired connection?
Located in the driver’s lounge and select booths in the restaurant you will find Flying J data jacks. The Ethernet and USB connections provide the same high speed access as the WiFi connection. Connect your Ethernet or USB cable  to the box. Install the driver from the CD if using USB. Open web browser and log in just like when using wireless service. There is some added security in a wired connection.

  5. Username or password not working.
Check your password with customer service if necessary. Also review the security settings in Internet Explorer. Make sure FlyingJ.com is added to your trusted sites.

  6. Antenna height. Why don't you raise them up higher to improve line of sight?
The antennas are set at a height to give you the most coverage and signal strength and are in compliance with local ordinances at the travel plaza. If we raised the antenna we would overshoot the trucks that are parked close to the facility.

  7. Why don’t you put the antennas on the light poles at the back of the lot?
Most of the light poles are solar powered, which would make the system inoperative during daylight hours. Power on the light poles are 220v and only available at night when the timer in the building turns on the lights. We will be experimenting with solar panels to charge a battery so our equipment will work day and night.

  8. Signal strength inside the restaurants.
We are currently placing more antennas in the restaurant to improve coverage and signal strength.

  9. How to deal with competing signals at non-Flying J sites?
Set your SSID (or network identifier) to flyingj. Call customer service to find out where the antenna is located.

  10. How to find the antenna at non-Flying J sites?
For the time being, please call customer service. In the near future we will have this information available to you on our wireless location page.
